This Home Is A Love Note To Artisan Craftsmanship | Portland, Oregon

At first sight of this home it is clear the love of art and craftsmanship that went into designing this 6,817 square foot home. Natural materials and modern technologies seamlessly blend together, just as this home does with its woodland surroundings.

Rising to popularity during the early part of the 20th century on the West Coast, Arts and Crafts architecture embodies a combination of Old Hollywood glamor and working-class sensibilities. Charles and Henry Greene, are credited as founders of the movement and it is their landmark 1908 Gamble House in Pasadena, CA that served as inspiration for this beautiful gated estate on a 1.4 acre lot located just minutes from downtown Portland.

Completed in 2011, this home has four bedrooms, five baths and two spacious, open levels of rich woodwork, nature-inspired stain glass and hand-stenciled designs. A gated entry leads to a circular drive that passes under a thickly-beamed port cochere that extends out from the front of the home providing guests a welcoming (and dry) entrance. The front drive circles around and crosses a creek-like path in the stone that connects a welcoming water feature to a koi pond near the entrance. The exterior is a combination of red brick, Montana bluff tumbled stone and cedar shake shingles accented by custom copper and glass lighting that casts a welcoming warm glow in the evening. The stonework alone took the brickmason nine months to chisel and lay by hand. The gorgeous front door was crafted by a local carpenter from ribbon mahogany and is inlaid with stained-glass panels with a design inspired by a Japanese black pine. Modified versions of the design can also be found in glass doors throughout the home. The foyer is also the first glimpse of the hand-stenciled Art Nouveau designs that grace the frieze bands of many parts of the home.

The two-story foyer leads into the large formal dining room that overlooks the spacious back yard. With enough room to easily seat 14, the dining room is warm and inviting and showcases the custom cherry millwork that flows throughout the home. The warm fireplace with a hand-hammered copper hood and screen that anchors one side of the room is shared by the adjacent vaulted living room where family guests are certain to gather after meals. Two levels of windows span the back wall of the room and feature the beautiful mature landscape of the backyard and pool.

Also just off the foyer is the comfortably appointed home office. Overlooking the front yard, the office features a beautiful built-in desk as well as bookcases and cabinets for storage. Nearby is the more relaxed and intimate family room with another warm fireplace and a cozy window seat that overlooks the front of the home.

At the far end of the main floor is the luxurious master suite that is separated by tall double doors and it’s own small foyer. The serene bedroom has a relaxing fireplace flanked by built-in bookcases and French doors that lead to a private backyard patio. The en suite bath is luxuriously appointed with dual sinks and a corner soaking tub with a peaceful, private view to the back yard. The frameless glass shower has a bench and multiple heads inching a large rainfall showerhead. The master suite also includes a mirrored exercise room with cork floors and a ballet barre. But the masterpiece of the space just might be the huge master closet. Appointed with a series of customized glass-front cabinets, the closet space is an organizer’s dream where everything can be tucked in its own place.

At the opposite end of the main floor is the incredible kitchen. An oversized granite island sits at the center of this beautifully appointed space where once again, the woodwork is the star. Lovely custom cabinetry includes the cabinet-front Sub-Zero side-by-side refrigerator, two Wolf refrigerator drawers and a Miele dishwasher. The focal point of the kitchen is the impressive six-burner Wolf gas range that includes a griddle and two ovens. The custom made copper hood that hangs above has a hand-hammered Japanese black pine design. The large under-mounted farmhouse sink overlooks the back yard and gardens through a large picture window that also gives wonderful natural light to the space. The nearby breakfast nook provides easy access to the back patio for cooking and entertaining. The butler’s pantry holds an additional Sub-Zero glass-front refrigerator, a Lieberr wine fridge, ice maker, Miele dishwasher and a hammered copper sink. The huge walk-in pantry is conveniently located for easy access from the kitchen, butler’s pantry as well as the garage for unloading groceries.

Just down the hall is the full-service laundry room, access to both sets of two-car garages and the wine cellar where more leaded glass and copper lighting provides a warm glow over the wooden storage and display shelves and built-in humidor. Also conveniently located in this area is a custom designed linen storage closet and spacious tech hub that houses all the home’s technology in a large rack for easy access.

Outside the backyard is a private haven with mature landscaping and a multi-level water feature that provides a cascading soundscape to the area. A broad walkway leads to the gleaming pool and broad pool deck that is sure to be a gathering spot for entertaining in the summer months. Large rhododendrons dot the landscape, thriving among the tall trees. A cozy covered patio sitting just off the kitchen nook features a huge stone and brick fireplace with a thick wooden mantle that matches the wooden beams above. Beautiful chandeliers hang overhead, matching the exterior lighting and copper downspouts. A built-in Twin Eagles grill sits in the corner, ready for summer barbecues.

Back inside, a grand staircase leads up from the foyer to loft library area and three additional bedrooms. Fireplaces are an important feature in Arts and Crafts homes and each bedroom features a small, cozy fireplace with arched glass doors and iron scrollwork. All three bedrooms include ensuite baths and large closets. At the end of the hall, double doors lead to the media room that includes a wet bar with sink, microwave and beverage fridge.

Built by award-winning Lake Oswego builder, Stoneridge Custom Development, this home is the amalgamation of the work of many of the area’s top artisans and craftspeople. Their importance to the creation of this home is memorialized in a plaque hanging near the front door. Without their art, the Arts and Crafts traditions that are demonstrated so beautifully in this home would not be possible.
